Christmas Tree Tips this Holiday Season

Setting out as a family to hunt down and bring home that perfect Christmas tree often signals the official start of the holiday decorating season. Nothing like sparkly tree ornaments and bright Christmas lights on a tall, green fir Christmas tree to get the Christmas spirit flowing. But no matter what the additions, the beauty of your Christmas display lies in the tree itself. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect Christmas tree to aid in your holiday decor.

The One for me! How do you know which fir
tree is the "perfect Christmas Tree"?
- Measure the space you will place it in. -Is it far away from high traffic areas and sources of heat-fireplaces, heat ducts and TV sets?
- If it's a cut Christmas tree, does it have a long enough trunk to secure it in the stand?
- Do you have a big enough Christmas tree stand to take the tree and a gallon of water (after displacement)?
- Is the cut Christmas tree fresh? Any falling green needles?
- Is it easy to decorate? Is there space between the branches? A Fraser or a Noble Fir tree has shorter needles and offer some space between branches for decorations as well as some stronger stems to hold heavier ornaments.

What kind of tree?
Douglas Firs are the most popular choice for a Christmas tree because of their sturdy, arching branches. Not only are they economical, but they also tend to have that elusive perfect Christmas tree shape. The Grand Fir keeps longer indoors-more than a month and has beautiful dark-green needles that smell like citrus fruits when crushed. Wreaths are often made out of the silvery green Noble Fir tree. Don't worry about shed needles with this one! The Norway Spruce is a Fir Tree with a lovely shape and is very adaptive to hanging ornaments with their short, blue-green, stiff needles.
Alternatively, apartment owners can participate in the holiday decor fervor with a 2 foot Rosemary bush trimmed to look like a Christmas tree. When you choose the perfect Christmas tree, make sure they come from up North or in case of the Douglas Fir, from Pennsylvania.

Decorating your tree!
When holiday decorating, make sure Christmas light cords work properly before draping them around the tree, and unplug the lights at bedtime or when you're away from home. When holiday decorating or embellishing your fir tree, go in this order- Christmas lights, garlands, tree ornaments. Do not wrap too many lights or use candles. Start near the base of the tree and weave strings of Christmas lights along the inside to the outside. Avoid breakable tree ornaments or those with small, detachable parts on lower branches where children can reach them. Place ornaments and other holiday decor inside to add depth and interest. Start by arranging "filler tree ornaments" (small globes of any particular theme) evenly spaced around the tree. Around 20 "filler ornaments" for every 2 feet would be needed to recreate that perfect Christmas tree.
Once you have created the perfect Christmas tree, sit back, enjoy your holiday decor and relax with that glass of eggnog!
